JOE WATERS IS WI-HI WRESTLING'S

11TH STATE CHAMPION, TEAM PLACES TOP 10

Joe Waters earned Wi-Hi's 11th individual state wrestling championship with a 6-2 victory over previously undefeated Mike Santiago of Oakland Mills in the MPSSAA 1A/2A 285 lbs. final match at the state championships Saturday.

Waters had to defeat the #1 ranked Sean Sisler of Southern Garrett just to get to the final, and will now wrestle in the District7/8 All-Star Match and the prestigious Maryland State Wrestling Association Senior Classic.

Joe finishes his career as a 3X State Qualifier, a 3rd place state finish his 11th grade year, and a state championship. He's a 2X Captain, a Regional Champion, a 2X Regional Finalist, a 3X Regional Qualifier and place winner, a Bayside Champion, and a 3X Bayside Finalist. The MPSSAA-produced video of his finals, with footage taken at matside, can be viewed here.

Junior Nick Leto (152) finished 3rd and senior Nick Slagle (215) finished 6th. The team finished in 9th of 68 teams, its highest finish in two decades. Senior Darrin Church (140) and sophomore Andrew Johnson (189) also won matches. Congratulations to all the Wi-Hi Wrestlers!

WRESTLING PLACES 3RD AT REGIONALS, QUALIFIES FIVE FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Wi-Hi Wrestling Team qualified five wrestlers for the 1A/2A East Regional wrestling tournament this weekend in St. Michaels and all five qualified for states! Two-time state qualifier Junior Nick Leto (152, 25-3) and three-time state qualifier senior Joe Waters (285, 23-3), who placed 3rd as a junior, lead the way as Regional Champions, with senior Nick Slagle (215, 22-7) as a #2, senior Darrin Church (140, 23-7) as a #3 and sophomore Andrew Johnson (189, 16-10) as a #2 seed. The team placed 3rd with just five wrestlers, the highest placing for Wi-Hi in 15 years! The Daily Times article on Wi-Hi can be found here.

Leto avenged two earlier losses to Kent Island's Ronny Marvel in the Regional Finals while Joe Waters collected a forfeit and Andrew Johnson made the finals in just his first year of wrestling. Slagle and Church both finished 3rd, but Slagle will advance as a #2 seed due to an ejection by an Easton wrestler. The tournament website with brackets and team-by-team results can be found here.

Leto and Waters both finished 2nd in the Bayside Championships in February. Slagle and Church finished 3rd, while sophomore Kevin Greenfarb (125, 13-13) finished 5th and senior Frank Hayes (171, 6-6) finished 6th. Any wrestler who placed in the top 4 advanced to the 1A/2A MPSSAA state championships in College Park next weekend for a chance at a state title. Wi-Hi has had 10 individual state champions and 24 more wrestlers who have placed. Wrestling starts at 2:30 p.m. Friday in College Park. Wish our Indians grapplers good luck!

WI-HI FINISHES 9-5, TAKES 7TH AT BAYSIDES, SENDS 5 WRESTLERS TO 1A/2A EAST REGION

From Coach Stone:

Over the weekend, the wrestling team finished the regular season at the Bayside Tournament. We finished the dual season with a 9-5 record which put us about 5th in the conference. At Baysides we finished 7th but we only entered 9 out of 14 wrestlers because we had some late attrition. Nick Leto and Joe Waters finished in second place. Both lost to highly ranked state wrestlers. Nick Slagle and Darrin Church placed third in very competitive brackets. Kevin Greenfarb placed 5th and Frank Hayes finished his senior season with a bang, as he was seeded 10th and beat three higher ranked wrestlers to place 6th! Travis Workman, Doug Ruark and Bo Wang also wrestled very well but failed to place.
Coming up this weekend we will be taking Darrin Church, Nick Leto, Andrew Johnson, Nick Slagle and Joe Waters to the Regionals tournament at St. Michaels. Anyone who places top four at regionals will qualify for the State Tournament so wish them good luck!

CITY CHAMPS!
